TO WITHUNTED MEN

As the planet Mercury shrinks, as Republicans and Democrats battle for the White House, as President Bush announces he’ll attend the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games—in China…

As today is the day of our Independence. When 13 rag-tag colonies rose-up and declared their separation from the British throne’s shadow.

It’s easy to forget that our founding fathers were hunted men. King George III, ever the statesman, ordered all of them to be hanged.

They were not the wigged, uniformed men of a Gilbert Stuart painting without a care in the world.

The prophetic John Adams wrote shortly before the signing of the Declaration of Independence:

“The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epocha in the history of America. I am apt to believe it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forevermore.”

(Ah, the founding fathers wanted to own guns. And shoot them.)

Happy Fourth of July.

If you haven’t seen “John Adams,” the HBO Miniseries. Please do.

Need to know: Another To Wit, a real To Wit, will appear soon. It’s about campaign consultants and campaign shake-ups.)
