TELL ME SOMETHING I DON’T KNOW

Ethan Eilon, the CRNC executive director of our hearts, appeared on FOX & Friends this morning, discussing a plan at the University of Colorado to hire a conservative professor. Or, some variation thereof.

According to a story in the Denver Post, the campus faculty has 32 Republicans. Out of 800. The university hopes to hire a professor of Conservative Thought and Policy.

TO WITONE AMERICA; NO…TWO

As the Chinese earthquake death toll remains at 15,000 (even), as the polar bear is now listed as a “threatened species” (and as Republicans may have the same designation, if last nights election results in Mississippi are a guide)…

As American Idol comes down to two Davids (but who’s the Goliath?)…

As John Edwards endorses Barack Obama for president. (Maybe he’ll do for Obama what he did for John Kerry…)

“You can’t just trade corporate Republicans for corporate Democrats,” Edwards continued.

(Note: He is now dead to Hillary Clinton.)

“There is one man who knows in his heart that it is time to tear down that wall and make one America, Barack Obama,” Edwards said tonight in Michigan.

Interesting, as Obama appears to have grabbed the nomination based on specific groups of people: blacks and white wine liberals.

Also interesting, coming from the candidate of “two americas.”

You wouldn’t know it…but there are other events to compete for your attention.

Perhaps John McCain’s decision to “go green.”

Or…

His wife’s decision to sell her Sudanese investments.

Or…

Former Los Angeles GOP mayor Richard Riordan’s restaurant empire.

Or…

The tiny bodies in a Chinese morgue.

Or maybe…

Everything is really centered on the American presidential election(s).

Depending on which America you live in.

SHOCK IN THE DELTA

The GOP lost control of a congressional seat last night in Mississippi. A bad sign for the fall.

The AP says:

Mississippi Democrat Travis Childers won a special election to Congress on Tuesday, helping his party to a third victory in recent months for seats long in Republican hands.

Childers defeated Republican Greg Davis by 4 percentage points in a special election to fill the final few months of a two-year term in Congress. The seat was vacated when Roger Wicker was appointed to the U.S. Senate after Trent Lott resigned.

The race had attracted national attention, with Vice President Dick Cheney campaigning for Davis on Monday, and Davis running ads trying to tie Childers to Democratic presidential contender Sen. Barack Obama.

HANGING CHAD?

Did you know HBO is set to release a new film on the 2000 recount? Did you know the Democrats are protesting?

The NYT begins:

Wounds from the Florida recount, still healing for many Democrats, are being ripped open again for some prominent former advisers to Al Gore. They say that a coming HBO film dramatizing the ballot battle after the 2000 election unfairly blames them for the Democrats’ failure to secure the White House.

Warren Christopher, the former secretary of state who served as the public face of the Gore team in the early days of the recount effort, said this week that he believed the film, “Recount,” was “pure fiction” in its portrayal of him as a weak strategist unprepared to stand up to the aggressive tactics of James A. Baker III, the former secretary of state who was the chief Republican adviser.

TO WITDEATH TOLLS AND MOTHERS DAY

As the reported Myanmar death toll is lowered from 100,000 to 28,458…

As this is proof of God. (Or bad reporting?)

As the Hurricane Katrina death toll moved from 10,000 to a final tally of 1,836. (Over night.)

As the TRUTH CAUCUS benchmark for a significant natural disaster isn’t the death toll. It’s whether or not CNN’s Christiane Amanpour shows up. (At last check, she’s not there.)

As Barack Obama thinks national, but Hillary Clinton thinks…West Virginia.

The border state. Virginia’s separated twin. The heart of Appalachia. Coal country USA.

The state John Denver says takes us home.

It’s do or die for Hillary Clinton in West Virginia. (Or wait, wasn’t that last week in Indiana?)

Anyway. If there’s one thing you need to know this week, it’s this: Hillary Clinton must win West Virginia by like 70%. (Along with the rest of the primary states. And the superdelegates. And, she might even need a posthumous endorsement from FDR.)

But, there are other things of concern.

The news cycle is about people saying O.J. Simpson confessed to killing his wife. (A question that may or may not have been answered…10 years ago.)

It’s about North Carolina shock polls and rising gas prices.

The news cycle is about the L.A. Lakers getting beat by the Utah Jazz and the box office bomb “Speed Racer.” (Admission requires an IQ of 65.)

The news is about Lebanese violence, elections in Serbia, and explosions in Gaza.

But, a cursory glance at the news wires tells us today is about more than that. It’s about the deep stuff. The important stuff. The stuff that warms our soul.

It’s about Jamie Lynn Spears celebrating her first Mothers Day.
