BROWNBACK GOES TO OHIO
In a week where several states jumped aboard the Straight Talk Express, a reader writes from Ohio:
Senator Sam Brownback spoke at Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio last night (10/24). Franciscan is the best well-known conservative orthodox Catholic school in the nation. Brownback, who converted to Catholicism in 2002, was greeted by over 400 students (our school has about 1900 undergrads) with cheers of Brownback, Brownback, Brownback. When asked if he was going to run for president, the entire room cheered wildly. The event was packed and was standing-room only… If Santorum does not win re-election, Brownback could easily become the candidate of choice for social-conservatives for 2008.
Franciscan University of Steubenville CRs have become a major player and force in Ohio College Republicans and would endorse his candidacy…
QUOTE OF THE DAY...
“Young conservative leaders in Michigan are inspired by his service in Vietnam, 24 year pro-life voting record, and steadfast campaigning on behalf of Republican candidates to help save our majorities.”
—Michigan CR State Chairman Dan Carlson, on supporting John McCain
MORE: MICHIGAN JOINS MCCAIN
John McCain’s Straight Talk America announced a Michigan Young Leaders Council which includes 27 Michigan CR leaders, including Dan Carlson.
Note: Michigan is an early primary state.
ROLL OUT: ALABAMA JOINS MCCAIN
Just last week, a tidal wave of CR support in South Carolina was announced for Sen. John McCain. Today (as alluded to last night on TRUTH), several CR leaders in Alabama (an early primary state) have joined the Arizona Senator.
Is this an early sign that Mitt Romney’s preference for Brigham Young is a weakness in the South?

Several College Republican leaders are expected to follow South Carolina’s lead this week in supporting John McCain.
SOUTH CAROLINA GOES FOR MCCAIN
Proving the yet-to-be-adopted conventional wisdom that southern boys won’t support a Mormon, a tidal wave of South Carolina College Republicans declared their support (in writing!) for Sen. John McCain.

The committee will spread Senator McCain’s message of support for 2006 Republican candidates across the state’s college campuses.

‘BOTCHED ABORTION’ MADE ROMNEY PRO-CHOICE
You have to go all the way back to 1994 (and even longer, in some cases) to piece together Mitt Romney’s stance on abortion.
A reader pointed out that Romney acknowledged he was pro-choice (just so long abortions are safe and legal) in 1994 to the Boston Herald.
Republican Senate challenger Mitt Romney disclosed last night that he became committed to legalized abortion after a relative died during an illegal abortion.
The Romney campaign later said that the relative was the sister-in-law of Romney’s sister, who died in the late 1960s as a result of the botched abortion.
Does the same thing go for partial birth?

THE TOP TIER
The National Journal released its latest “White House 2008” rankings (because we, as a nation, must arbitrarily list everything).
John McCain is still #1, Mitt Romney is still #2, and George Allen came crashing down. (Surprise!)
ROMNEY: ARNOLD SLEEPS WITH A DEMOCRAT

A TRUTH CAUCUS special operative writes from the California GOP state convention, where Mitt Romney gave a keynote address and the State GOP ran out of booze:
Romney spoke on the threats facing America: Jihadists, oil dependency, competitiveness in business with rising Asian nations, and a few others. He spoke on liberty and how America is unique in its deep love for it, and how America is unique for its reluctance to use victory in wars for territorial gain.
Romney displayed his characteristic dry wit:
“Arnold has it a bit easier with Democrats here in California – he sleeps with one.”
and
Romney said upon introduction: “Thank you, thank you, I accept the nomination….oops wrong convention.”
Besides Romney, CRP was a great success, and in particular the California College Republicans threw a party in our penthouse hospitality suite. Things got especially busy once Arnold’s room ran out of alcohol and hordes of Arnold staffers and miscellaneous politicos made a mad dash for the top floor [to join the California CRs].
TELL ME SOMETHING I DON’T KNOW…
Mitt Romney was the featured speaker at the California GOP Convention tonight in Los Angeles. (Hopefully someone will send me a report.)
Romney was in Orange County earlier this week where he raised $1 million dollars from So. Cal A-listers (a.k.a. Michael Davidson supporters). [Orange County Register]
LIVE FROM ORANGE COUNTY…
A TRUTH CAUCUS special operative went to the Mitt Romney event in the O.C. last night and offers this update:
“Went to a campaign event last night, at the st. regis, hadi makerician puts on one hell of a show. I can see the appeal of Romney, however, I wasn’t blown away by him. He is definitely a viable candidate, and i definitely think that he is being underestimated. He had some good ideas, getting off oil, keeping quality immigrants here ignorant immigrants out (don’t see how he’ll get the 45% (or whatever the fuck Bush got in 2004) of the latino vote with this one), and controlling spending. He has the look and sound of a presidential candidate, but he doesn’t give off that electrical vibe to the audience like rudy giuliani does (or did at the 2004 RNC convention).”
“That being said, the place was packed. He’s definitely bringing in money, and he has a bank account that no other challengers at this point have. He is a very good communicator, and doesn’t talk over people’s heads, or down to people. not as folksy as bush, and not as smooth as reagan. I was one of a few non-romney people there, and those that were in his camp, LOVED him.”
RUN MITT RUN, RUN AWAY
Iowa Governor Mitt Romney (er…Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney) has created a 527 organization (and website) to address the Mormon religion and why it’s misunderstood. A LA Times poll earlier this month found that 37% of all Americans would not vote for a Mormon for president.
