REPUBLICANS FLOURISH AT BERKELEY

ORGANIZATION FEATURED ON WSJ A1

UNIVERSITY: ‘LARGEST POLITICAL GROUP ON CAMPUS IS REPUBLICAN’

Josiah Prendergast (who’s from a gospel family?) and his organization, the Berkeley College Republicans, was featured on the front page of today’s Wall Street Journal (complete with a WSJ drawing):

BERKELEY, Calif. — The University of California at Berkeley has been notable for firebrand leftist students like Mario Savio. The 1960s leader of the Free Speech Movement staged sit-ins on campus to demand students’ rights to academic freedom and free speech. On a recent Thursday, one of the university’s new generation of student leaders was playing with a life-size cardboard cutout of Ronald Reagan.

“Elect Ronald Reagan,” called out Josiah Prendergast, before unfolding the cutout on a grassy field on the Berkeley campus. After propping up the late Republican president, the 21-year-old reached into a bag and pulled out stickers and buttons featuring the slogans “Support Our Troops” and “Schwarzenegger: Protecting the California Dream.”

CAL SUPPORTS CANCER

The Berkeley College Republicans are trying to fight cancer, but the university won’t let it happen.

The Berkeley College Republicans was planning a “Dunk A Republican” event where students pay money to throw balls and attempt to dunk various campus conservatives with the proceeds going to cancer research. They held the same event last year—the organization even obtained special event insurance.

This year, however, UC Berkeley administration officials are forcing Republican to remove the dunk tank for “insurance reasons.” (With less than 24-hour notice.) Just two weeks ago, a University spirit organization had several dunk tanks on campus, with no apparent trouble from the university.

At one point, there was even a mechanical bull on campus. (I don’t know when the last time you rode a mechanical bull on a college campus was, but I’ve got one word for you: dangerous.)

One must wonder: If this were an event to pay for abortions, would the University say “No”? Cancer…now that’s another story. (There’s nothing medicinal marijuana can’t solve, according to some of these university liberal types.)

Some College Republicans believe the fly-by-night university policy is a political ploy in a heated election season.

Berkeley CRs will be on campus today protesting. (Hopefully protesting like civilized human beings…after all, this is a school where they strip naked to protest sweatshop labor Goddamnit!)

Only time will tell…

I MISS YOU LOTS SINCE SAN DIEGO

Tonight, a report says ONE of the AIM conversations made public by ABC News happened with a young man named Jordan Edmund.

Edmund, a California native and UC Berkeley dropout, is currently in Oklahoma working on the Istook for Governor campaign. (He’s working with former Tennessee CR State Chairman Zack Condry.)

MTV WORKERS GET NASTY

‘I HOPE YOUR WIFE GETS RAPED AND CAN’T GET AN ABORTION’

We’ve all heard the stories, former California College Republican State Chairman Michael Davidson, the cultural warrior, led a protest against MTV workers and “Rock the Vote” (you know, that “non partisan” thing) for supporting John Kerry and misleading young people about a “looming draft” in the 2004 election. (Rock the Vote sent out 660,000 e-mails just before the 04 election with a mock draft card signed by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld.)

An MTV worker, in response, spews such hate as, “I hope your wife gets raped and can’t get an abortion.”

And now, for the first time, we have video (you have to see it to believe it):

ROMNEY: ARNOLD SLEEPS WITH A DEMOCRAT

A TRUTH CAUCUS special operative writes from the California GOP state convention, where Mitt Romney gave a keynote address and the State GOP ran out of booze:

Romney spoke on the threats facing America: Jihadists, oil dependency, competitiveness in business with rising Asian nations, and a few others. He spoke on liberty and how America is unique in its deep love for it, and how America is unique for its reluctance to use victory in wars for territorial gain.

Romney displayed his characteristic dry wit:

“Arnold has it a bit easier with Democrats here in California – he sleeps with one.”

and

Romney said upon introduction: “Thank you, thank you, I accept the nomination….oops wrong convention.”

Besides Romney, CRP was a great success, and in particular the California College Republicans threw a party in our penthouse hospitality suite. Things got especially busy once Arnold’s room ran out of alcohol and hordes of Arnold staffers and miscellaneous politicos made a mad dash for the top floor [to join the California CRs].

TELL ME SOMETHING I DON’T KNOW…

Mitt Romney was the featured speaker at the California GOP Convention tonight in Los Angeles. (Hopefully someone will send me a report.)

Romney was in Orange County earlier this week where he raised $1 million dollars from So. Cal A-listers (a.k.a. Michael Davidson supporters). [Orange County Register]

LIVE FROM ORANGE COUNTY…

A TRUTH CAUCUS special operative went to the Mitt Romney event in the O.C. last night and offers this update:

“Went to a campaign event last night, at the st. regis, hadi makerician puts on one hell of a show. I can see the appeal of Romney, however, I wasn’t blown away by him. He is definitely a viable candidate, and i definitely think that he is being underestimated. He had some good ideas, getting off oil, keeping quality immigrants here ignorant immigrants out (don’t see how he’ll get the 45% (or whatever the fuck Bush got in 2004) of the latino vote with this one), and controlling spending. He has the look and sound of a presidential candidate, but he doesn’t give off that electrical vibe to the audience like rudy giuliani does (or did at the 2004 RNC convention).”

“That being said, the place was packed. He’s definitely bringing in money, and he has a bank account that no other challengers at this point have. He is a very good communicator, and doesn’t talk over people’s heads, or down to people. not as folksy as bush, and not as smooth as reagan. I was one of a few non-romney people there, and those that were in his camp, LOVED him.”

And yet another YourCRNC operative heads to California…

Former Texas CR State Chairman and YourCRNC candidate for CRNC Co-Chair Sarah Floerke is headed to San Diego to work for Victory 2006 and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

TELL ME SOMETHING I DON’T KNOW…

Michael Davidson’s “buddies” Hadi and Paul Makarechian were featured in a LA Times list of the most powerful people in Southern California (“Greed is good”). GenNext, an organization run by Davidson, also received a shout-out.

Hadi Makarechian
Chairman, Capital Pacific Holdings, 58, Newport Beach

Ever wonder why so many Orange County Republican fundraisers happen to take place at the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort and Spa in Dana Point? Hint: The hotel’s developers are local GOP heavyweights, Hadi Makarechian and his son, Paul. The elder Makarechian made a fortune in construction on the East Coast, retired in 1990 to California, then made another fortune building coastal McMansions. A board member of Orange County’s New Majority, he has donated prodigiously to Schwarzenegger and his various initiatives. Meanwhile, Paul, a fledgling commercial developer, has helped launch GenNext, a New Majority spinoff for younger GOP members.
